    Our April 20 Armchair Tour will focus on Bloomington and will feature a discussion with Mick Renneisen, Deputy Mayor, and Alex Crowley, Economic & Sustainable Development Director, City of Bloomington.
     
    The Armchair Tours series is designed to:
    • highlight high quality development going on around the state
    • identify development opportunities throughout Indiana - and local leaders behind those opportunities
    • provide content relevant for ULI members beyond Central Indiana, and introduce potential members to what ULI is about.

    Alex Crowley

    Director, Economic & Sustainable Development Department, City of Bloomington

    At the City of Bloomington, Alex’s responsibilities are to cultivate a resilient community built on shared prosperity, economic opportunity, environmental stewardship, and a thriving arts and culture ecosystem. Before joining the City, Alex helped to run and launch small businesses in and around Bloomington. His professional background combines advertising and operations management in a variety of fields including telecommunications. He has held leadership positions at Ogilvy & Mather: New York, AT&T, and Insight Communications and has served on the board at Cardinal Stage Company. Alex is a native of New Haven, Connecticut, a graduate of Fordham College in New York, a composer, and the doting father of a sophomore Boilermaker and two high schoolers.

    Adam Thies

    Associate Vice President for Capital Planning, Indiana University

    Adam D. Thies, AICP, was appointed associate vice president for capital planning at Indiana University in October 2019. Thies had served as an assistant vice president for capital planning since August 2015. Thies oversees and advises on master planning as well as architectural design for all IU campuses. Thies also has oversight of space planning and landscape architecture, while contributing to efforts to incorporate sustainability into the campus experience. Prior to coming to Indiana University, Thies was director of the Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD) for the city of Indianapolis, where he managed a professional staff of 75 city planners, redevelopment officials, transportation planners, and design review/zoning professionals with an annual department budget of $32.3 million. In this role, he served as the executive leader of the city’s Community Development division, Planning and Zoning division, Historic Preservation division, Redevelopment Authority and Brownfields Program. Additionally, he served as the administrative leader of the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), authorized all tax abatement compliance, directed the city’s New Markets Tax Credit Program, and served as a cabinet member to the mayor on economic development projects and strategy. Before working for the city of Indianapolis, Thies was the founder and president of EDEN Collaborative, a boutique real estate, landscape architecture, and city planning consulting firm. While at EDEN, he created the city of Indianapolis and central Indiana’s first transit-oriented development strategic plan to leverage an anticipated $1.2 billion investment in transit in the next 20 years through the Indy Connect transportation initiative. Additionally, he led and managed many of Indiana’s premier planning and design projects, including planning for the 2012 Super Bowl Legacy Neighborhood Project, the redesign of Indianapolis’ Monument Circle, and the creation of a plan for midtown Indianapolis. He was named one of 40 under 40 by the Indianapolis Business Journal in 2009, has been named Ball State University’s Graduate of the Last Decade, and was named Ball State’s College of Architecture and Planning’s Outstanding Alumni in 2013.

    Mick Renneisen

    Deputy Mayor, City of Bloomington

    Appointed as Deputy Mayor by Mayor John Hamilton in 2016, Mick serves as chief of staff for the administration and supervises 16 departments in implementing policies and goals. In addition, Mick serves as lead project manager for several major initiatives, including the redevelopment of the Bloomington Hospital site. From 1996-2015, Mick served as Administrator of the City’s award-winning Parks and Recreation Department. During his tenure, the department completed over $50 million in capital projects. Mick also assembled land and funding resources and led the master planning process for Switchyard Park, the largest park project in the city’s history. He has served as president of the Indiana Parks & Recreation Association and Visit Bloomington and has been an adjunct instructor at Indiana University in the School of Public Health. Since 1983, Mick has been an NCAA statistician for the Indiana University Men's basketball team and the internal press box announcer for IU football home games. He has been a licensed sports official in basketball, baseball and football, as well as a USA Softball - licensed umpire.
