Celebrating New Members - August 2023

Meet ULI Indiana's Membership Chair, Betsy Sears Sullivan
If you have been to an event over the last few years, you have . As a self-proclaimed “diehard Hoosier basketball fan,” Betsy has been serving on the ULI Management Committee as Membership Chair since 2019! Until the membership committee was re-established in 2023, Betsy served as a one-woman welcome wagon at most of our events and has truly made ULI shine on LinkedIn with her event photos, videos and posts.
Betsy leads the business development and marketing efforts at Inherent Commercial and describes her current role as a gift. Her love for our industry and community shine through in every interaction with Betsy, which makes sense, as both of her parents are in the real estate field, on the residential side. Her father is a custom home builder and mother a designer. Although Betsy never envisioned herself working at a commercial construction company, when she met the owner and the only other employee at that time, she immediately realized it was more important to work with the right people, not the “right company”. “Inherent is 7 years old and I’ve been with the company for 5.5 of those years,” Betsy says. “It’s easy to wake up and be motivated every day when you are building a company with people you respect.”
Betsy has much to be excited about related to her ULI Management Committee role.
“I’ve been leading the Membership Committee for a few years now and through COVID. In the last 9-12 months I’ve seen a significant change, for the better, in the organization. Our members are highly engaged again and look very different than they did just a few years ago…so I’m excited to keep building on that with the help of the newly reformed Membership Committee.”
Betsy grew up in Indianapolis in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood and still lives there today. Except now, she lives with her hubby and four kiddos, ages 8, 5, and 2.5-year-old twins! You can imagine the mayhem, but Betsy loves every single second of it. She reports that they are all independent in their own ways now, so she’s gotten back to running after 8 years and doesn’t know how she went so long without it! A little (or well) known fact is that Betsy lived in San Diego for 8 years where she met her husband. They loved living a block from the beach, but that experience made her cherish the “really big, small town” feel that Indy has and that drew her back home.
“My passion for our industry started with my parents, whose company designs, renovates, and builds custom homes,” Betsy says. “Maybe even more influential though, is that I was fortunate enough to grow up and currently live in a neighborhood that is highly walkable. We don’t have to get in our car on the weekends if we don’t want to because we can walk to parks, restaurants, shops, schools, the neighborhood pool, the grocery, coffee shop, etc. Living where I do has created a passion and respect for the built environment and the key role it plays in all our lives. Lastly, I’m a learner at heart and as long as I show up, I learn something new every single day.”
Betsy loves ULI events because she learns things she won’t learn at another organization in this industry. As a research institution, ULI excels at providing content that other groups aren’t able to offer.
