The PREWITT Restaurant + Lounge
Formally a movie theater built in 1927, the Prewitt was recently renovated into a New Americana restaurant serving craft dishes and trendy cocktails. The restaurant not only showcases great food and drinks but also provides entertainment with live music, wine dinners, movie nights, murder mystery dinners and much more.
In collaboration with the Town of Plainfield, two local developers took on this project helping fulfill part of the town’s overall vision for the re-development of Plainfield’s downtown area. Over the course of two years of planning and preparation and only seven months of renovations, The Prewitt Restaurant and Lounge opened its doors on Nov. 18, 2022.
During the renovation process, the majority of the building was preserved, including the theater’s barrel ceiling, some penny tile flooring, an ornate fireplace upstairs and the brick walls that line the former theater room. Pieces of the building that were demo’d were reused in various locations throughout the space such as original timber framing and ceiling joists to create an ornate bar surround, molding around door frames and a decorative wall detail along the stairway next to the main bar.
The restaurant features many unique spaces used for dining and event space including a roof top dining area. The Prewitt Restaurant and Lounge is a unique and exciting addition to the revitalized downtown Plainfield area.
